Powell Cemetery

Home and farm located at1681 Powell Rd Dr. Dana Cox – Graduated from Muskingum College. While at Muskingum he boarded from John Glenn’s parents and he and John became lifelong friends. Dr. Cox was a clinical professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the Ohio State University College of Medicine while also maintaining a private practice on State Street across from Grant Hospital where he was at one time, the Director of Obstetrics and Genecology. It was at Grant Hospital where he delivered this author and my sister in 1951-52. The Cox’s first child was Nancy. While going through his Obstetrics training in New York City, she passed away from an accidental fire at the age of three. The Cox’s had one other daughter Rachel and later adopted three boys, Douglas, William and Charles. The Coxes lived on Powell Road at the site which is not the Powell Methodist Church. Dr. Cox was known to be very involved in helping couples adopt. His son Bill recalls from his cousin who grew up and practiced law in Cambridge, Ohio, "that Dr. Cox was known to have helped many couples from Cambridge adopt, that he could have been mayor". Locally, Dr. Cox was known to help residents with assorted medical issues such as fishing hooks in fingers, wounds, or other accidental incidents. Dr. Cox and his first wife Faye met at Muskingum College. Faye was a teacher at Hyatts Elementary School when she passed away. Dr. Cox purchased the farm and home on Powell Road in late forties or early fifties. He built his home around the existing structure that originally was built by Titus Case in 1835, son of George Case, an early settler to the area. Roughhewn beams were evident in several spots in the basement, which match beams in the old barn. The Case property was sold to the Zinn family in the early 1900's including 100 acres which is now Deer Run and the Powell Methodist Church. When Dr. Cox purchased the property, he remodeled the home from a basic rectangle-shaped farmhouse to a Southern Colonial Style structure. Large pillars in the front of the home were made in Atlanta and shipped to Powell where they were hoisted up by hand, creating the two-story front porch. Three fireplaces were put in including one in the kitchen plus five bathrooms. Feel free to refer to the Eulogy Letter at the link below for Dr. Cox from his partner.
