Did you know that the 100 acres of land south of Powell Road between Murphy Parkway and Old Sawmill Road was once the site of the Powell Speedway? After WWII Chuck Murphy, a motorcycle enthusiast, and his father, Shy, cleared brush and removed some buildings used during the years the Delaware County Fair was held in Powell (1909-37). They created a banked half-mile dirt track from the former horse track and began with motorcycle and eventually stock car racing. Eventually the track was paved and n the 1950’s and early 60’s the summer crowds grew at the Powell Speedway, attracted by stunt shows and Indianapolis 500 drivers. Car club rallies and other occasional events were held in later years until the speedway was sold for housing developments in 2000.
