Powell Liberty Historical Society

A window into the past of Powell and Liberty Township

Marge Bennett

When this photo appeared in the Delaware Gazette in 2005, Marge was 78 and still tending to the sheep on the farm originally owned by her great grandfather John Lowry. The hilly farm on Powell Road, with its green pastures and fading red barn, built in the 1850’s or 60’s, is now surrounded by residential developments. Raising sheep started many years ago after her husband Willard's son, Bill, was given a breeding ewe to raise for a 4H project. Marge retired from her position as a manager in the Ohio State University Admissions Department in 1991, the year of Willard’s death, but stayed active with many volunteer organizations, travelled the world, and took water aerobics classes into her nineties. Marge was one of the founding members of the Powell-Liberty Historical Society and was instrumental in saving the Martin-Perry House, whose first residents were her ancestors Albert and Mary Lowry Martin. Marge continued to live on “Powell’s last farm” with her son Mike until her recent death December 2, 2023, at the age of 97. She will be greatly missed.
