A window into the past of Powell and Liberty Township

Weinstock Motors

As horse and buggy gave way to automobiles, Harry Weinstock opened a Chevrolet Garage in downtown Powell in 1929 in what had previously been a Ford dealership. Weinstock Motor Sales, in business until 1951, was located at 18 North Liberty Street in part of the building now occupied by the Liberty Antiques Mall. Harry Weinstock started as a barber when he came to Powell from Toledo in 1912. Harry and his wife Laura made their home on Case Avenue and lived there the rest of their lives. Every fall when the new Chevrolets arrived, Harry would put them on display and have a big community party, with music for dancing, cider, doughnuts and hot dogs served to the guests. The 1938 Chevrolet Master Sports Sedan in this ad would have retailed for $817. The price of gasoline in 1938 was 20 cents a gallon.
