Summary

In recognition of the Carpenter family, the first settlers of Liberty Township, arriving on May 1, 1801, the May program was a showing of Sherry Carmichael’s video, “Irena Carpenter’s Diary.” The video is based on information past down by family members, but Sherry takes it a step farther and imagines what it would have been like for a woman to make the trek from upstate New York to the unsettled wilderness with a family of 10 children. After the video Sherry briefly talked about some of the other early settlers.

Title:   The Irena Carpenter's Journal and Early Settlers of Delaware County Ohio

Presentor:   Sherry Carmichael

Description:   The Irena Carpenter Journal is a historical fiction account of the Nathan Carpenter family’s 1801 journey from New York to the banks of the Olentangy River—before the area became Liberty Township in Delaware County. Inspired by historical records, the journal offers a woman’s perspective on the trek, following Irena as she leaves the familiarity of settled life for the woodland wilderness, traveling with her husband and their ten children to become the first family to settle in what became Liberty Township. Written by Sherry Carmichael, the journal comes to life in a video presentation in which she portrays Irena. This video was recorded at the May 18, 2026 program of the Powell-Liberty Historical Society where the Irena video was shown followed by a discussion of some of the other early settlers of the area.
